Diversifying Doulas Initiative

Patients R Waiting is addressing the maternal mortality crisis by providing Lancaster Black and Latinx expectant moms with doula support. The health disparity experienced by women of color surrounding childbirth is heightened by COVID-19. Doulas can help to meet the emotional support needed by providing care and education, virtually and in person. The paucity of doulas of color in Lancaster is also being addressed by our doula training program.

"We appreciate your interest in having a doula for your pregnancy. Beginning June 1st, 2023, the Diversifying Doulas Initiative will refer patients directly to our Certified Doulas (CDs). Please visit the website of the doula of your choice (see below) and book your services. You will be financially responsible for those services.

Starting on June 1st, 2024, the Diversifying Doulas Initiative will RESUME taking clients through our coordination care team and doulas on our website (patientsrwaiting.com/ddi). We will offer a predetermined number of fully subsidized doula care to clients who meet the eligibility and financial criteria.

The Diversifying Doulas Initiative is using this brief but crucial time to evaluate our data and measure our outcomes. Our team is excited to disseminate and share our results on the impact of doula care and maternal health outcomes.

Best regards,

DDI Leadership Team"

Our Goals

Increase Access

Doulas have proven to provide many benefits to pregnant women, but they can often costs upwards of $1200. Through this program, we will place pregnant women of color with experienced doulas, free of charge. Benefits can include reduction in anxiety, lower rates of C-sections, and much more.

Recruit

Because of the lack of diversity within doulas throughout Lancaster, we have provided women of color the formal training necessary to become a certified doula. Through a process curated by doulas themselves, we have increased the doulas of color in Lancaster by over 900%.
