April’s Book: Medical Bondage
Welcome to the "What the Health" book club! This month, we will be discussing "Medical Bondage" by Deirdre Cooper Owens.
In "Medical Bondage," Owens explores the intersection of race and medicine in America's history. She delves into the ways that Black women's bodies have been used and abused in the name of medical progress, from the era of slavery to the present day.
Through extensive research and vivid storytelling, Owens sheds light on the ways that medical professionals have justified their mistreatment of Black women by dehumanizing them and denying them basic human rights. She also highlights the work of Black women who have fought back against this oppression, using their own bodies as a tool for resistance and advocacy.
This book is a timely and important exploration of the history of American medicine and its relationship to race. It challenges us to think critically about the ways that our healthcare system still perpetuates racism and inequality today.
We can't wait to discuss this powerful and thought-provoking book with you all. Happy reading!
